Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable medication used to treat a wide range of conditions, including many medical issues. It’s been in use for more than 50 years, and in more recent years has become the world’s most popular noninvasive cosmetic treatment.
Having Botox injections to smooth lines, folds, and wrinkles is both safe and effective. More than 15 years of clinical studies and over 500 peer-reviewed articles have looked at the safety and efficacy of this treatment.
It’s important to work with a medical professional who is experienced in Botox injections. It takes a combination of skill and an artistic eye to place the injections in just the right spots to achieve optimal results.
How does Botox work?
Botox is created from a carefully controlled formulation of Clostridium botulinum, a toxin found naturally in forests, lakes, and soil. In larger concentrations, this toxin is deadly, but the minute volume used in Botox is perfectly safe.
Once injected, the toxin in Botox creates a partial paralyzation in the targeted facial muscles. That prevents those muscles from going through their full range of motion when you smile, frown, eat, or speak.
Because the muscles are no longer moving the same way, they can no longer pull and tug your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles. The end result is smoother skin that looks more youthful and well-rested.
What’s it like to get Botox?
In the hands of a skilled practitioner, Botox injections are fast and simple. It takes three injections to treat crow’s feet and five to treat forehead lines and frown lines. The injections are relatively shallow and require only a small needle.
The entire process takes just a few moments. Results develop between 24-48 hours after your session, and last around four months. At that time your lines and wrinkles will slowly begin to reappear, and you can decide whether to pursue a new round of treatment.
Many women choose to have Botox at the same time as dermal fillers, which work to replace lost facial volume and create more rounded and youthful contouring. This combination approach is sometimes referred to as a “liquid face-lift.”
