Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that arise from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. They are solid, as opposed to cystic, and vary in size. Symptoms from fibroids vary – the majority of women have no symptoms at all; however, some women have symptoms from fibroids that adversely affect the quality of their life.
Typical symptoms include:
- Heavy menstrual bleeding
- Pelvic pressure or pain
- Changes in bowel movements
- Urinary frequency or incontinence
- Infertility
For asymptomatic fibroids, no treatment is needed; however, women with symptoms sometimes need their fibroids removed (i.e. myomectomy) or their entire uterus removed (i.e. hysterectomy). Often times we can offer a minimally invasive option for these procedures, resulting in less pain and shorter recovery time.
